13 is famously an unlucky number, and you’d be unlucky if you figured that was 13 different titles, however. On the surface, it appears that Konami’s being super generous, because Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection includes 13 turtles games from the late 80s through the mid-90s. Don’t think I’ve forgotten you either Sega.
With so many retro collection packages out there, I was very keen to see what Konami would do with the Cowabunga Collection, if only because other Japanese development houses have tended to be… shall we say. Related reading: Konami actually did a really good job with the Castlevania collection, too. If you were playing a console TMNT game in the late 1980s or early 1990s, it was made by Konami, or one of its subsidiaries (when it was trying to get past Nintendo’s output limits for the NES). Michelangelo can hover using his nunchaku as a helicopter, Leonardo can drill the floor by spinning with his katana, Raphael can hide himself inside his shell to enter passages that are otherwise too small to enter, and Donatello can stick to and climb walls.A wide variety of companies have held the licence to produce TMNT games over the years, but Konami can lay claim to having been the first. Each turtle has a different ability which is necessary to finish the game.
Unlike other games based on the franchise, this is a scrolling action-adventure game reminiscent of the original Metroid and the later Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The player begins the game by taking control of Michelangelo, who must rescue the other Ninja Turtles, along with Splinter and April. "Michaelangelo, If you want your brothers, come to the abandoned mine." Michaelangelo accepts, and the game begins. Michaelangelo comes back shortly after they leave, and looks around for them, Only to hear an ominous voice from the TV.
An emergency news broadcast with April O'Neil comes onto the screen, and she suddenly screams on screen. The game takes place when Leonardo, Donatello, and Raphael are waiting for Michaelangelo to come back with the pizza they sent him off to get.
